A future worth fighting for.

Former hostage Alon Ohel performed with Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik on the USS Nimitz as part of a celebration of America's 250 years of Independence.

There is a lot I could say about the image of a former Israeli hostage playing piano on one of the greatest military ships in the world.

But to me, this moment transcends politics, popular culture, and even nationality.

Alon, a gifted musician, was taken hostage in Gaza.

There was an enormous effort made to bring him home.

In all the military might that was exercised in the last three years in our region, to me, this moment captures what it means and what it's all for.

Because military might can be used to threaten, to control, or to persecute.

But it can also be used to secure, to save, to ensure a return to peace.

Because watching Alon play with John (who rededicated his song Superman to the hostages during their plight)- and listening to their music- ultimately, that is what it all SHOULD be for.

For countries to create safety so that we can return to music.

And storytelling.

And art.

And joyful living.

And meaning-making.

The stuff that makes us human.

I find this performance to be so moving.

Because it's a glimmer of a return to life.

It reminds me that peace isn't just the absence of war.

It's the return of music.

Of creativity.

Of people gathering to celebrate life instead of mourning death.

That's the future worth fighting for.
