Another singer on my Spotify who breaks my heart.

I love Coldplay. They have been one of my favorite bands for decades. Karaoke staple. Road trip must. Pre-bed playlist.

But this interaction that Chris Martin had with two lovely Israelis made me want to vomit.

Avia and Tal were invited on stage at their performance at Wembley Stadium in London. He asked them where they were from, and they (nervously, they later explained) said they were from Israel.

With 90,000 people in the crowd, the crowd was divided by boos and cheers. And Martin did not look thrilled, uneasy at his piano.

He then said this, "Okay, well listen — I’m very grateful that you’re here as humans, and I am treating you as equal humans on earth, regardless of where you come from or don’t come from."

Then he continued with, "Although it’s controversial maybe, I also want to welcome people in the audience from Palestine because… out of the belief that we’re all equal humans."

He finished with this, "Thank you for being here, I’m very happy to see you, look at your beautiful green eyes." (I hope he at least would have launched into his song Green Eyes after that statement. He didn't.)

There's a lot to extrapolate here. I'll be honest, I keep getting tripped up on the need to strip them down to just their humanity to make their presence acceptable.

What are you saying Chris, we're equal in humanity but not in our identity?

And hold on, it's only OK to be kind to your Israeli fans in public if you acknowledge people from Palestine, as if some sort of equivalency makes the fact of our existence balanced? Is that like a weird PR move, or do you really believe that couching accepting our existence in acknowledgment of another people is the only way?

You need to say we are human to remind yourself that we are human? What the heck kind of propaganda are you ingesting? And I love how the statement that Israeli's are human is like a brave bold statement.

"Look how humanist I am that I can transcend politics and your government and primordial conflicts and acknowledge you are a person!"

"Regardless of where you come from or don't come from."

You mean that it's hard to acknowledge that Jews come from Israel? Now and forever? Indiginiety? What pile are you stepping in here, bud?

I'll tell you this, Chris. It is controversial to validate someone else's national identity and then feel like you need to acknowledge that we exist "in context" of a conflict that these two Israeli fans have no control over.

That is just so messed up. I don't even know that he believes any of this. But I think he thought his fans did. And that he needed to cower to their prejudice is just gross. You can watch his brain spinning as he keeps on talking.

Avia and Tal were afraid to say where they were from, thinking they would just say Malta, because admitting you are a Jew in front of 90,000 people today is dangerous.

There are so few left to enjoy.

And isn't that a powerful commentary in itself?
